Styling for Comfort

Despite having worked as a fashion stylist, I get frustrated with the consumption of trends. I sometimes cringe at ‘Trends for Spring’-type posts and articles that seem to ignore the fact that this spring, we’re all staying home.

There is only one ‘trend’ to seek out right now, if you’re financially fortunate enough to shop at all: sweatpants, and anything else that keeps you as physically soothed and emotionally light as possible. .

I think there’s opportunity here — to become more globally- and environmentally-minded in our shopping habits, and to practice dressing for our authentic selves.

With nowhere to go and no one to impress, there’s an ‘anything goes’ spirit in the air. You can finally get the rainbow crocs that make you smile, you can wear nothing but spandex, or you can wear nothing at all. You can keep on wearing bras and jeans, if that’s your thing…but I’d suggest a perfectly worn-in vintage pair.

And, if it’s your prerogative, you can still make comfy clothes a ‘look’.

One of the chicest loungewear looks is an all-white white sweat set, like this one from Entireworld. Simply tuck in your sweatshirt and add some killer accessories.

I love how Les Tien and Deiji Studios style their cotton and linen sets with crew socks plus boots or sneakers. It’s a tomboy-cool look that says “I just rolled out of bed” — something that you can literally do.

I was a little taken aback when I first saw this image because it’s so close to an outfit I wear regularly — a pair of Nagnata biker shorts and a cropped black sweatshirt. I love that they styled it with a black baseball cap, gold jewelry, crew socks, and chunky sneakers. Another one of my favorite stay-home looks is a Nagnata sports bra or crop top with…any pants, including jeans, like in the top photo. I find myself wearing (and talking about) this brand constantly. Their pieces are stylish, versatile, and sustainably-minded. Look how cool the founders looked in this photo, styled in blazers.

…and if/when we ever get released from stay-home orders, you can dress up their pieces even more.

…Finally, while we’re home, let’s just enjoy living in our bodies and hang out wearing very little, or nothing at all.
